Shakatak nació en Agosto de 1980 con su disco “Drivin’ Hard” y empezó a oírse a raíz del sencillo “Easier said than done“, que fue un TOP 20 en las listas británicas, permaneciendo en ellas 17 semanas.
El éxito mayúsculo les vendría por el álbum de 1982 “Nightbirds“, el cuál se convirtió en disco de oro. El single que daba nombre al disco, “Nightbirds” (una canción prácticamente instrumental), llegó al número 4 y se quedó 28 semanas en las listas. Este disco les dio una gran fama internacionalmente, llegando incluso a ser número 1 en Japón en álbumes de Jazz. Ese mismo año, realizaron una extensa gira de 132 actuaciones a lo largo de Europa y Japón.
Después de su tercer y cuarto álbum, decidieron para su quinto álbum “Down on the street”, seguir una dirección musical diferente y se unió al grupo Jill Saward con el rol de cantante principal. Con los singles “Down on the street” y “Watching You”, consiguieron encumbrarse de nuevo en las listas de éxitos.
El sexto álbum fue una grabación en directo realizada en Tokyo y Londres. Para el séptimo álbum “Day by day”, se encargaron de escribir todas las canciones ellos mismos.
En 1986, Saward anunció que esperaba un bebé y dejaron de actuar una temporada, en pos de realizar trabajos de estudio. Después de ganar el premio de plata en el Festival Internacional de la canción de Tokyo, se les pidió que produjeran un álbum extra cada año exclusivamente para el mercado japonés.
Sus dos álbumes extra, “Into the Blue” y “Golden Wings” se vendieron muy bien, y en 1987 consiguieron el premio al “Mejor Álbum Instrumental” por la Asociación Fonográfica Musical Japonesa.
Después de esta etapa, Shakatak decidió tomarse las cosas con más calma y sacar sencillos y un álbum para el resto del mundo. Después de “Something Special”, consiguieron un éxito con “Mr Manic & Sister Cool”. En 1990, llegaron a tener dos álbumes en el número 1 de la lista de jazz contemporáneo y el reconocimiento con un Grammy japonés por el “Mejor Álbum Instrumental” con 6 años de vida.
A lo largo de la década de los 90, siguieron elaborando discos de estudio, pero desde el año 2000, han vuelto a actuar en directo también y siguen activos como siempre, sacando discos casi todos los años, pues desde el año 2007, han no han publicado ninguno.
